The Architecture and The City Festival is produced by the San Francisco branch of the American Institute of Architects. The yearly event includes free films at the SF Public Library, architectural tours, exhibitions, lectures, and, of course, San Francisco Living: Home Tours. This popular festival includes collaborations with local design and community partners, firms and organizations to further creative ideas and advance the conversation surrounding the local built environment, to celebrate accomplishments and together work towards building a more sustainable future.

The 2015 theme, Play: Design in Action, is reflected in my curation of the festival film series. Play is a dynamic and essential element of the creative process for design arts, and this year the festival explores how San Francisco’s design community uses play and playfulness to create and inspire and to connect design with other fields (health, education, economic development). How does a playful approach help overcome the tendency to truncate the creative process? How do you create an environment for taking risks, making mistakes, and learning? This year’s Architecture and the City Festival Film Series includes documentaries about the joys of playing in built environments and animated shorts that celebrate the joys of architecture.
